ABOUT US
The Bank of Lincoln County was first organized as a private bank in July of 1888, a few years after Elsberry was founded. It operated as a private bank until December 1, 1890, when it was chartered as a state bank.
Bank of Lincoln County was the second bank established in Lincoln County. The other Bank that was operating in Lincoln County at the same time was unable to successfully weather the financial crisis of 1933 which has left
Bank of Lincoln County as being the oldest Bank in the county.
As mentioned earlier, the bank successfully weathered all depressions and financial upheavals and the only time the Bank closed since it was started in 1888 was during the moratorium in March 1933, when every bank in the country closed by presidential decree. It was among the first to re-open its doors to its customers and the public.
In 1894 a fire that originated in a local restaurant destroyed a
large part of Elsberry that included The Bank of Lincoln County. It
was said the vault doors were white hot and could not be opened for
several days. The Bank originally stood where the teller stations
are today. The same vault doors are still used. Underneath the floor
there is still charred wood from the fire.
With continued growth of the Bank, in 1926, it was decided the bank building needed to be reconstructed. Consequently, the Bank area was increased approximately 40%.
In 1983, the bank was again remodeled and an addition was added that increased the size of the bank by approximately 50%. A round vault door dating back to the 1920's was refurbished and installed in the new addition for the purpose of storing safe deposit boxes. This vault door weighs approximately 38,000 pounds.
By 2004, the bank once again was in need of more room. An
extensive remodeling project was completed by December of that year.
In the Bank lobby stands one of the original rectangle cash vaults that was built about 1850, and weighs approximately 8,000 pounds. This vault was restored in 1983.
Also in the Bank lobby stands a round cash vault that was built in 1904, and weighs about 2,000 pounds. This vault was also used by the Bank back in the early 1900's. This vault was also restored in 1983.
On December 22, 2006 Bank of Lincoln County opened a second location. The new location is in Winfield, Missouri.
Our beautiful facility is located at the corner of Old Troy Road and Highway 47 in Winfield.
In June, 2007 a loan production office (LPO) d/b/a Providence
Bank was opened in Columbia, Missouri. This expansion has enabled
our bank to grow our balance sheet in a conservative manner, while
expanding in a stable and thriving market. In December, 2008 our
second Columbia location of Providence Bank was opened as a full
service branch at 8 N 5th Street.
